NCUA DEI Summit Coverage: Board Member Rodney Hood Honored by Six Groups for His Commitment to DEI

WASHINGTON–During NCUA’s DEI Summit here, six different credit union groups honored NCUA Board Member Rodney Hood for his commitment to financial inclusion and DEI during his time on the board.

Hood’s term has officially expired and he is serving in a holdover capacity until the nomination of Tonya Otsuka is voted upon by the Senate.

During the DEI Summit, the African American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC), CU Pride, the CU DEI Collective, Inclusiv, the Hawaiian Asian Pacific Islander Credit Union Professionals (HAPICUP) and the National Association of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals (NLCUP) praised Hood for his work.

Rodney Hood holds his new award during DEI Summit.

“His commitment to the DEI principles is an inspiration to all of us and we promise to continue his efforts to recognize the importance of financial inclusion as the defining “civil rights issue of the 21st century” as he often talks about it,” the organizations said.

Hood will be addressing the DEI Summit today.

Many Accomplishments

In their statement, the groups went on to say:

  • “In 2020 and under Hood's leadership, NCUA launched its new Advancing Communities through Credit, Education, Stability, and Support, or ACCESS, initiative, doubling down on his commitment to financial inclusion.
  • “We wholeheartedly agree with Hood's belief that there’s a clear, rather indisputable, business case for credit unions to embrace financial inclusion by expanding services and lending deeper in the marketplace. In fact, our research shows, in no uncertain terms, that credit unions can do well by doing good and that financial inclusion isn’t just sustainable, but a driver of growth and relevance.
  • “We deeply value Hood's efforts to support MDI credit unions, institutions that can and should be instrumental in any efforts to address the racial equity gap. As an industry and as a movement, that diversity truly set us apart and gives us a platform to connect with populations that have been historically marginalized and ignored by the financial mainstream.
  • “There are many other accomplishments that are now part of Hood's legacy, but his efforts to bring technology into the credit union space and build bridges with fintechs to collectively create a more inclusive financial marketplace, will have a lasting impact across the nation for years to come.”
