NAFCU’s First CEO and Former CUNA EVP, James Barr, Passes Away

ARLINGTON, Va.– James Barr, who served as the first CEO of what is now the National Association of Federally Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU), has died. Mr. Barr was 87.

Barr served as NAFCU CEO from 1970-1978 and was a “key advocate in the legislative efforts to change the Federal Credit Union (FCU) Act that enabled credit unions to expand their offerings and become full-service financial institutions,” according to NAFCU.

“Through his leadership positions within the credit union industry, Jim was instrumental in helping achieve legislative and regulatory wins that shaped credit unions into what they are today,” said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. “NAFCU is grateful to have had Jim’s leadership at our start. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Sara, and their family and friends.”

Additional Efforts

In addition to FCU Act reforms, NAFCU Barr helped lead efforts to capitalize and strengthen the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund.

An Army veteran, Barr also served as CUNA’s EVP and Director of Governmental Affairs and on the Board of Trustees of the Trust for Credit Unions, including as chairman.

NAFCU itself was formed in 1967.
