NAFCU Presses Congress For Working Group on Data Breaches

ARLINGTON, Va.—NAFCU is asking Congress to establish a working group to develop legislation that would help prevent the massive retailer data breaches that have occurred this past year.

NAFCU SVP of Government Affairs and General Counsel Carrie Hunt Wednesday sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi urging them to establish a bipartisan-bicameral working group.

“I write today in response to the increasing national dialogue on the need for data security legislation,” wrote Hunt.

She added, “Credit unions are on the front lines assisting their members in the wake of ongoing data breaches and have a unique understanding of how detrimental such data breaches can be to consumers and small financial service providers.”
