WASHINGTON–Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) told credit unions at NAFCU’s Congressional Caucus that “someone needs to go to jail” over the recent data breach at Equifax.
"It's a problem when people act with impunity without any consequences," she told the meeting.
As CUToday.info reported here, members of the Senate Finance Committee are demanding that Equifax answer questions regarding its massive data breach, including why three of its executives sold shares after the breach had been discovered. Senators also want to know more about Equifax’s own data security practices. The Equifax breach affects as many as 143-million Americans.
For Equifax, the sale of stock by insiders is just one of several issues the company must now address since the breach, which affects as many as 143-million Americans, was announced.
Earlier in the week, NAFCU CEO Dan Berger reiterated the association’s call for universal cybersecurity standards.
Capito told Congressional Caucus that data and cybersecurity are front and center in the Senate. "We need to work globally to solve this problem," she said.
