WASHINGTON—Two people from opposite sides of the political aisle offered their thoughts on the state of the country, American politics and the 2024 elections in comments to NAFCU’s Congressional Caucus.
The meeting heard from Ari Fleischer, White House press secretary under President George W. Bush, and Donna Brazile, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee. Both Fleischer and Brazile, who each noted they are long-time credit union members, remain active in political consulting.
Fleischer discussed the increase in polarization and the changing voter bases in each party, saying college-educated Americans are increasingly becoming Democrats. Meanwhile, middle and working class Americans are increasingly voting for Republicans.
‘Expect the Unexpected’
Fleischer told the meeting to “expect the unexpected” in the 2024 election, and suggested third-party candidates could have more success than previous years and that the general election could be a variety of matchups.
Brazile said that both parties are going through a period of “unease” and that there is a need for young Americans to answer the “call for public service.” Despite the turmoil and pessimism in the country, she told the meeting she believes the country’s best days are still ahead, but she added that it is up to the people, not the parties, to unite the country.
Speaking on 9/11, both Fleischer and Brazile reflected on the terrorist attacks of 22 years ago, with Fleischer remarking that the attacks proved America can unite and come together, no matter the circumstances.
The pair also noted their long-tenured credit union memberships.
