Municipal CU Clarifies Report Related to Data Breach, Member Accounts

NEW YORK–Municipal Credit Union has issued a statement to clarify reporting that appeared in one local publication that suggested a large-scale data breach occurred at the credit union. The clarification suggests the breach did not occur at the scale implied by the report.

A CUToday.info report, based on the New York Sun reporting, stated that in November a significant number of MCU members had experienced fraud on their accounts. However, according to Municipal Credit Union, the reporting that appeared in The Sun, which was based on an earlier story by News 12 Bronx, “made statements that are factually incorrect.”

In response to the report, a spokesperson for Municipal CU told CUToday.info that on Nov. 12 it “became aware of suspicious activity regarding some members’ debit cards. Noticing a pattern, our fraud-monitoring service immediately notified these members of suspicious transactions and their cards were frozen; the number of members affected was in the low triple digits.”

‘Thorough Investigation’

The credit union reported it “completed a thorough investigation” and found an attempted fraud indicative of skimming, reimbursed any members for losses, and replaced their debit cards.

The matter was also reported to law enforcement, MCU added.

Additional Clarification

In addition, Municipal CU said The Sun report that was cited by CUToday.info also indicated multiple members had been interviewed and that amounts from $400 to $1,000 had been taken from accounts.  But MCU said the news outlet did not interview multiple members, and instead interviewed just one.
