Moving Forward, You Will Need to Google Whatever Happened to Google Pay

MOUNTAINVIEW, Calif.—Google is adjusting its mobile payments services again, killing off Google Pay in the U.S. in favor of Google Wallet.

The standalone Google Pay application will disappear on June 4 in order to "simplify the app experience," Google said in a statement.
Americans will still be able to tap to pay in stores and manage payment methods from Google Wallet. However, P2P payments will no longer be available, according to reporting by Finextra.
Google Wallet first appeared more than a decade ago but was rebranded in 2015 as Android Pay and then again in 2018 as Google Pay.
“In 2022, Google Wallet made a comeback, replacing Google Pay in most countries, but Google decided to offer both apps in the U.S. Now, with Google Wallet used five times as much as Google Pay in the U.S., the company has decided to opt for one app,” Finextra stated.
