SPRINGFIELD, Ore. –A mother and daughter have been indicted here for an alleged scheme in which they defrauded Oregon Community Credit Union.
According to court records, Vernetta Cartwright, 56, and her daughter, Ashley Cartwright, 37, were investigated by the Springfield (Ore.) Police Department after at least 11 allegedly fraudulent checks were passed from one bank account to another between the mother and daughter.
“Initially, police believed only the daughter was involved, according to a probable cause affidavit, however the two women admitted to their scheme when authorities tracked them down to an apartment on A Street,” KEZI reported.
Admission Alleged
Those same court documents indicate the daughter reportedly admitted that she and her mother decided to conduct the scheme because "we were in a hard spot and needed money right there,” the news outlet reported, adding that Ashley Cartwright said had no job and six children, while her mother lives on Social Security.
Court documents show that both women are charged with first-degree theft.
Oregon Community Credit Union lost $2,300 in the scheme, according to court documents, KEZI reported.
