More Than 800 At Illinois League Meeting Get Update On Need for Advocacy

CHICAGO–More than 850 people turned out for the Illinois CU League’s 89th annual meeting here. Among those addressing the meeting was then NCUA Chairman (now board member) J. Mark McWatters, who was the opening keynote, as well as Kevin Smith from TEAM Resources and Andy Janning, a popular speaker, author, and photographer.

CUNA CEO Jim Nussle attended the Delegates Meeting and emphasized the key role the convention plays in supporting credit unions.

“The Illinois Credit Union League Annual Convention is a great time to spread the credit union difference and showcase the incredible work our members do within their communities,” Nussle said.

During the meeting, leaders of the Illinois league’s  advocacy team, including Keith Sias, Patrick Smith, Ashley Sharp and Stephen Olson, provided a legislative and regulatory update, during which they also encouraged attendees to get involved in future endeavors.

Tom Kane, president and CEO of ICUL, also weighed in on the importance of advocacy.

“With 50 new state legislators in place after the last election, we have a great deal of work ahead to raise awareness about the positive impact and benefits of credit unions within their local communities and the larger economy,” Kane told the meeting.

Attendees were also given an update on CUNA’s “Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union” awareness initiative.
