ARLINGTON, Va.–More than 20 experts in the field of cybersecurity – with backgrounds on everything from deterrence of cybercrime to managing public relations related to a cyber crisis – are set to speak at the NASCUS/CUNA 2017 Cybersecurity Symposium, June 5-6, in San Diego.
The Symposium – now in its fourth year as a collaboration between NASCUS and CUNA – will feature more than 14 hours of presentations, dialog and discussion over two days, according to the two groups. The event looks at cutting-edge techniques and best practices and procedures to protect organizations from the latest cyber threats and challenges.
Sessions include: international trends; combating cyber-enabled financial crimes; incident response—forensic and crisis communication in breaches; 10 things that make a hacker’s job easy; understanding the vulnerabilities of the cloud; cyber risk rating an institution, and more.
Topping the roster of speakers is keynoter Jim Stickley of Stickley on Security, an internationally known cybersecurity expert and lecturer. During his career as a security consultant, he has stolen credit cards, hacked Social Security numbers, robbed banks, and created fake ATMs. Stickley is a frequent guest on network television news programs airing cybersecurity segments. He’s also been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers including Time Magazine, Business Week, Fortune Magazine, New York Times, PC Magazine, CSO Magazine and many others.
Others scheduled to present and speak at the event include:
- Randy Romes of CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA), who will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event; he is a principal in the Financial Institutions and Information Security Services group at CLA, where he leads a team of technology and industry specialists providing IT audits and security assessments.
- NCUA Board Member (and former Chairman) Rick Metsger, who will discuss the agency’s commitment to cybersecurity at credit unions, and other topics.
- David Anderson (who presented at the 2016 symposium in Chicago) is a manager and information security consultant for CLA, with wide experience in performing and providing project management for network penetration testing, internal vulnerability assessments, and social engineering engagements within a wide range of industries.
- Chad Carrington (who also presented at the 2016 symposium), of Golden 1 Credit Union is vice president for IT, cybersecurity, and facilities, where he leads complex hardware and software environments and large scale system upgrades, all while keeping a close eye on information security.
- Matthew Froning, CIO of Security Compliance Associates, served the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years leading technical assessments, evaluations and integration of multiple complex Network Warfare products, identifying shortfalls, gaps and capabilities critical to the Air Force’s network operation mission.
- Marshall Heilman of Mandiant (a Fireeye company), who has extensive experience performing incident response and Red Team operations for Fortune 500, high technology firms, law firms, the financial industry, and government organizations; working on many of the highest profile and public breaches over the last 10 years; he speaks at conferences around the world.
- Chad Nordstrom (another alumnus of the 2016 program) is manager in the Information Security Services Group for CLA, providing IT and security audits, security assessments, and incident response for clients; he is actively involved in the information security and forensics industry.
- Tim Segerson, NCUA Deputy Director of the Office of Examination and Insurance (E&I) (also a presenter in 2016) is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of E&I, and speaks regularly on cybersecurity issues related to credit unions supervised and insured by the agency.
- Patrick Sickels of CU*Answers, has completed extensive work in designing risk models and control frameworks for a vast array of commercial, manufacturing, and financial firms. His specialty is the design of compliance models which meet legal standards at low costs for organizations.
The event will be held at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter Hotel.
Cost for the June 5-6 program is $900 for NASCUS, CUNA members; $1,050 for Non-NASCUS/CUNA members.
