EAST LANSING, Mich.–Members of Michigan State University FCU have been reporting unauthorized international transactions on their cards, prompting the state’s attorney general to weigh in on the issue.
On New Year’s Eve some members of the credit union noticed unauthorized charges from “LOVE-WORLD TV” began appearing on their statements.
According to MSUFCU, approximately 2,000 of its 300,000 members have been effected. The credit union said it is investigating what occurred and reassured members their information is safe.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessell issued a statement calling on members to protect their accounts and to quickly respond to notices regarding suspicious activity on their MSUFCU credit cards.
“This is another example of how fragile our information infrastructure is, and how vulnerable all of us are to cyber hacking,” Nessel said.
Members Were Alerted
MSUFCU said it has alerted effected members via phone, email or text, and also posted alerts to Facebook and Twitter. Members have been instructed to respond “No” to messages asking if suspicious activity was a transaction they had authorized.
The attorney general urged consumers to take a number of steps if concerned, including pulling their credit report and placing a fraud alert on their credit file.
“We have been made aware of these transactions and are actively working with our card processors to block the transactions before they are attempted on the cards,” said MSUFCU President April Clobes in a statement.
