More Than 150 Banks, CUs Hit by ‘Brand Impersonation Attacks’ in Q1, Analysis Finds

BOSTON–A new analysis said it has found 164 regional bank and credit union brands in a sample of institutions experienced 870 online “brand impersonation attacks” during the first quarter of this year.

The "2022 Threat Brief: Credit Union and Regional Bank Brands Under Attack” report from Allure Security, a provider of online brand protection solutions, defines brand impersonation attacks as those that involve fraudsters publishing a website, social media account, or mobile app that imitates a brand's imagery and messaging to trick consumers into divulging banking credentials, payment details, and more.

According to the company, which said its AI-powered detection engine evaluates more than 40 million websites daily for brand abuse, said that while it found 164 regional bank and credit union brands in the sample experienced the 870 online brand impersonation attacks, most common domain monitoring methods “failed to identify 69% of these attacks,” Allure Security said.

‘Absurdly’ Intensive

“Domain monitoring required evaluating more than 18,000 websites and up to 302 person hours to find a single online brand impersonation,” Allure Security added. “Not only is domain monitoring alone insufficient, it's also absurdly resource-intensive.”
