CHICAGO–Alliant CU, which announced last week it was victimized by a large identity theft attack, now says it believes the crooks were focused on stealing money from financial institutions and not the people whose identity they used.
As CUToday.info reported, last week authorities reported that as many as several-hundred bogus accounts from the Dayton, Ohio, area have been opened at Alliant Credit Union, which bills itself as “An online credit union for all your banking needs.”
Alliant told WDTN the fraud ring stole identities from people in Ohio and attempted to open phony accounts at several institutions and not just Alliant. The credit union said that most of the attempts to open fraudulent accounts were blocked and the CU worked with detectives to uncover the theft ring. Alliant said those who did have accounts opened did not suffer any financial losses, the news station added.
In a statement to the newspaper Alliant credited the “quick work” of its fraud team for preventing losses and that the credit union “thoroughly vets” all new applications. The CU added, “As a precaution, Alliant recommends all Huber Heights residents check their credit report to ensure that no accounts have been falsely opened in their name and consider changing their password for their financial institutions.”
