More CUs Report Data Breaches Related To An Email Account Compromise

TAMPA—The $600-million FloridaCentral Credit Union here and Abbott Laboratories Employees CU, Gurneee, Ill., have reported they each may have suffered a data breach that stemmed from email account compromises. The breaches may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information, reports state.

Both incidents follow the $109-million MembersOwn CU reporting it may have experienced a data breach related to an email compromise.

According to data breach law firm Strauss Borrelli PLLC, FloridaCentral CU reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems, belonging to over 36,000 individuals, may have been accessed between April 2 and April 4. According to the breach notice, the CU recently discovered suspicious activity in an employee’s email account. As a result, the organization launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

According to Strauss Borrelli, the exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by FloridaCentral.

However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state identification card number
  • Account number, credit card number or debit card number, if circumstances exist wherein such a number could be used without additional identifying information, access codes or passwords
  • Account passwords or personal identification numbers or other access codes

Abbott Laboratories ECU Impacted

Abbott Laboratories Employees Credit Union may have suffered a breach related to a compromised email account that affected 36,044 individuals, Migliaccio & Rathod LLP stated in a release.

"On September 23, 2024, Abbott Laboratories Employees Credit Union discovered suspicious activity on its network and launched an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the breach. The investigation determined that an unauthorized third party accessed the email account on Aug. 2, 2024, and may have acquired certain information contained in the account. Affected consumers were not notified of the Abbott Laboratories Employees Credit Union data breach until Oct. 18, 2024. Abbott Laboratories Employees Credit Union discovered that hackers were able to compromise a significant amount of personal information," Migliaccio & Rathod LLP  stated.

The compromised information included a variety of highly sensitive details including names and Social Security numbers, Migliaccio & Rathod LLP stated.
