WASHINGTON–The national midterm elections are still eight months away, but the credit union trade groups are already looking ahead.
All 435 House seats are up for re-election, of course, but so are 35 seats in the Senate. Complicating matters is there is a higher-than-usual number of current elected officials who are not running for re-election, and the 2022 elections are the first following redistricting after the 2020 Census.
NAFCU’s VP of legislative affairs, Brad Thaler, said the trade group has been looking at the potential mid-term races and forecasts for some time.
“We are always looking at who are the emerging leaders, how are our friends doing, who do we need to educate,” said Thaler. “We’ve also started to look ahead to at the agenda for the next Congress. It’s not necessarily anything concrete.”
Thaler noted that by the time the legislative season heats up it becomes much more difficult to move any legislation as the focus is more political than legislative. After the election, there is then a lame duck session of Congress before the new Congress is sworn in.
Doing the Homework
Until then, Thaler said NAFCU is doing its homework.
“We talk to credit unions back in the home states and districts to see what kind of relationships they have,” Thaler said. “We meet with candidates when they come to Washington and talk to them. We track the polling numbers. We look to see who has a history of supporting credit unions and we get their thoughts on issues that are important to credit unions.”
