LANSING, Mich.–Banks and credit unions in Michigan could be eligible to provide Secretary of State services under legislation introduced in the Michigan House.
House Bill 5171 would let banks, credit unions and other accredited financial institutions apply to provide certain Secretary of State services - specifically renewing driver’s licenses or vehicle registrations, according to MLive.com.
The Secretary of State would determine requirements for participation and whether financial institutions that applied were eligible under the bill, and a financial institution could charge an additional fee for providing the service, MLive.com added.
In a statement, the bill’s sponsors billed the concept as a way to make lines shorter at Secretary of State branches, saying citizens shouldn’t have to go to an inconvenient location, make an appointment weeks in advance or stand in a long line to fulfill their obligations.
‘Services Taxpayers Need’
"Services that taxpayers need, due to our own state regulations, should be provided quickly, and either online or at a location convenient,” the bill’s sponsor said. “Government shouldn’t be this painful,” Maddock continued.
The proposed legislation has 21 Republican House co-sponsors and was referred to the House Transportation Committee for further review, according to MLive.com.
It would have to be passed by the House and Senate and signed by the governor to become law.
