LANSING, Mich. — Following an unexpected flood in Michigan’s upper peninsula that has left many residents in dire need of help, the Michigan Credit Union League and the Michigan Credit Union Foundation have each pledged $10,000 to the victims.
The combined $20,000 will be provided to Michigan Tech Employees Credit Union and Torch Lake Federal Credit Union, and will be used to help offset flood damages incurred by credit union members, such as furnace, drywall, flooring and other structural damages, according to the Michigan league.
The league said many resident CU members are currently in need of significant housing repairs, while others have been displaced from their home altogether.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder declared a state of disaster for Menominee and Houghton counties following the floods. Heavy storms through the weekend prior brought up to seven inches of rain in several counties, and in addition to mudslides more than 60 sinkholes have been reported on the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Michigan Tech Employees Credit Union and Torch Lake Federal Credit Union have set up a fund for flood relief donations.
‘Hearts Go Out’
“Our hearts go out to our friends, families and the communities that have been impacted by this disaster,” said Michigan Credit Union League President/CEO Dave Adams in a statement. “While I’m saddened to see our communities in distress, I’m encouraged by the immediate outpouring of support from the credit union community. Credit unions work in a uniquely cooperative way to support one another, and that’s on full display today.”
In addition to donations from MCUL and MCUF, the MCUL Paul Bunyan Chapter of Credit Unions donated $1,000 and the Upper Peninsula Chapter of Credit Unions donated $3,000 toward disaster relief.
Credit unions can donate to support impacted members by contacting MCUF Executive Director Beth Troost via Beth.Troost@mcul.org or at (734) 793-3453.
Personal donations to aid the area’s flood victims can also be made to the Portage Health Foundation.
