TORRANCE, Calif.—Employees and members of a CalCom FCU office here were ordered to the ground as three men robbed the credit union, and fired a shot in the process.
The robbery occurred at 11:40 a.m., and the thieves escaped in a blue 2005 Kia Optima with more than $30,000, authorities said.
Police explained that the crooks burst into the $64-million CU, one brandishing a handgun, and ordered everyone inside to the floor. Torrance police Sgt. Robert Watt told the Daily Breeze that during the crime a robber grabbed one female employee and pushed her toward the vault. The robber holding the gun, pointed the weapon toward the ceiling and pulled the trigger.
“It wasn’t fired at anyone in particular,” Watt said. “Maybe an attention getter.”
CU employees in the back of the building phoned police as the robbery took place. Police arrived quickly with their guns drawn, surrounded the credit union, and motioned for employees to come out. No injuries were reported.
