Members of Northeast CU Latest to be Targeted by Crypto Scam

PORTSMOUTH, N.H.— Northeast Credit Union is the latest CU to have to caution its members over a scam, in this case related to cryptocurrency.

The $1.94-billion Northeast CU is cautioning its more than 144,000 members that some are being contacted by scammers who pose as representatives of NCU and claim the member needs to withdraw funds.

“They are then instructed to deposit their funds into a bitcoin machine,” the credit union said in a statement on its website. “Some members have also had their computers hacked and compromised from a fraudulent Microsoft pop-up link.”

No members have lost money to the scam, nor has the credit union itself, Northeast Credit Union spokesperson Diane Carragher told SeacoastOnline.com.

Carragher told the publication the false phone calls mirror a national bitcoin scam and urged anyone with a bank account to be vigilant for similar scams, regardless of the financial institution.

Members Reach Out

“Due to our educational approach, some members reached out upon receiving a fraudulent call from an imposter claiming to be a company representative,” she said.

As the report stated and as CUToday.info has reported, the Federal Trade Commission said there were approximately 2.6 million reports of fraud in the United States and more than $10 billion in reported losses due to fraudulent activity.
