Members at 2 Different CUs Report Missing Funds

RICHMOND, Va.— Members of two credit unions in different parts of the countries are reporting unauthorized activity in their accounts, with a skimmer believed to be the culprit in at least one case.

At Call FCU here, members began noticing their accounts were being emptied over the weekend.

“I was in the store getting ready to purchase something and I found out that something had depleted my account,” Call FCU member Latesha Thompson told WRIC. “They assured me over the phone to come in and everything would be fine.”

Call FCU told WRIC there are no indications a breach occurred.

Members of the credit union are being urged to contact Call FCU if they believe there is any unauthorized activity on their accounts.

As for Thompson, the CU member whose account was emptied, she told the news outlet,  “I called and cancelled my card and I came in this morning and had great service.”

Unauthorized Transactions in Michigan

Meanwhile, in Burton, Mich., approximately 100 members of the $721-million EGLA Credit Union also reported unauthorized transactions. Karen Church, CEO of ELGA Credit Union, told MLive.com it’s uncertain how scammers were able to empty some accounts of all their funds.

Church told the news outlet all members are being made whole.

“I use the app. I was getting ready to make a deposit over the weekend,” member Sherry Smith told the publication. “Later in the day on my way to the ATM to make another transaction, I noticed the amount was pretty close to zero, like $5.”

Smith expressed some concern that she was not alerted to what was taking place

ELGA reported it is now calling all members identified as potentially having a compromised card. Members can also set up alerts in the mobile app.

“It appears transactions were made at a few branches,” Church told MLive.com.
