ST. LOUIS – More than two-dozen members of American Eagle Credit Union here have reported money has been taken from their accounts as the result of a suspected data breach.
One member, Michelle Quarles, told local Fox News, “I feel like my money is not safe. That’s all the money that I had and now it’s gone. I’m just very upset.”
At least 30 members were waiting in line when the credit union opened after they realized their cards had been hacked over the weekend, according to the report.
According to St. Louis Police, it is believed thieves placed a skimmer on an American Eagle ATM to capture the member card data.
Several members told Fox News their accounts had been emptied out.
In response, American Eagle Credit Union released a statement saying, “We have become aware that our members are being affected by card fraud via ATMs at the south St. Louis branch and those affected members will not be liable for any resulting unauthorized charges...”
Members said the credit union had indicated it would work to reimburse them over the next several days.
