Members, Customers In Illinois Report Fraudulent Card Data

DECATUR, Ill.–A number of financial institutions here are reporting member/customer card information has been hacked.

Approximately 100 people have reported fraudulent charges on their accounts, according to a report by WANDTV.com. Among the institutions involved is Decatur Earthmover Credit Union.

The credit union, which has received member complaints about funds being taken from their accounts, said it has not yet identified the source of the breach.

"It could be anything. We always do checks on our ATM machines because you always hear about people putting skimmers on those machines," Barry Schmidt, the president and CEO of Earthmover Credit Union, told WANDTV.com. "We check all of our machines to make sure there's nothing on those. We haven't found any evidence at any machines at this point, but it could happen at card processors, which are the people who process the transactions for Visa. It could be at merchant level. It could be a data breach."

Schmidt told the news outlet it is investigating every member transaction to see if there is a common merchant used. It is also refunding members for any stolen funds.
