TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—A member of Alabama One Credit Union here has gathered a sufficient number of signatures on a petition to be added to the ballot in the credit union’s upcoming board elections. Jerry Logan’s name will appear on the ballot, as will the names of three incumbent board members—Larry Sexton, Richard Powell and Danny Harrell.
Logan previously served on the board when the credit union was known as BFGoodich Employees CU, and unsuccessfully ran for the board by petition in 2004 and again in 2006, when his petition was rejected for insufficient signatures. This year he needed 500 signatures to join the board; Logan said he gathered 592, and the credit union has accepted the signatures as valid.
Logan has been critical of the credit union’s management for refusing to take questions from members during the CU’s 2014 annual meeting. In particular, Logan, along with other members, said they wanted to ask questions about Alabama One’s relationship with local businessman Danny Ray Butler, who is serving time in federal prison after pleading guilty to bank fraud and wire fraud.
Local media reported that in 2013 several members filed civil suits against the credit union claiming monetary damages as the result of deals involving Alabama One and Butler. One of those suits was dismissed, two others were settled out of court, and one is still pending.
