NEW YORK–Marriott International is again reporting it has been hacked, but this time the data breach was not as massive as that it reported in November of 2018.
According to Marriott, it has discovered someone using the log-in information of two employees accessed an "unexpected amount of guest information" totaling more than five-million guests. Marriott said it believes the incident happened between mid-January and February of this year.
As CUToday.info reported here, in 2018 Marriott said its guest reservation system has been hacked and that the personal information of approximately 500-million guests has potentially been exposed. For 327-million people, the exposed information included their names, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, date of birth and arrival and departure information. For millions of others, their credit card numbers and card expiration dates were potentially compromised, the company said, adding it is unable to confirm if the hackers were able to decrypt the credit card numbers.
In the most recent breach, Marriott said hackers were able to access the birth dates, names, mailing addresses and loyalty information about guests, such as which airline programs they belonged to and their point balances. No passwords or credit card information appear to have been lost.
Marriott said it is alerting those affected by the latest hack and has started a website and call center. It also said that it "does not currently believe that its total costs related to this incident will be significant."
