Man Who Allegedly Robbed CU Jumps In River

ST. PETERS, Mo.–A man who allegedly robbed a credit union here and then jumped into a river attempting to elude capture has been arrested.

Police have not released the name of the man who allegedly robbed a branch of Gateway Metro Federal Credit Union at 10:37 a.m., demanding money and carrying a semi-automatic handgun.

After leaving the credit union he reportedly ran west, with one witness saying they saw him get into a maroon Pontiac G6. Police released surveillance photos and asked for help in finding the man, who is a heavy-set white male who reportedly wore gloves, a fake beard and glasses in committing the robbery.

Tips from witnesses led police to the suspect’s home in Wentzville, Mo., where a man was seen getting into a maroon Pontiac G6, but he fled. Following a police pursuit, the man stopped his car on the Blanchette Bridge, got out and jumped into the Missouri River, according to police. Surviving the fall, the man began floating northbound in the river, and the St. Charles City Fire Dept. sent three rescue boats with police, and he was eventually surrounded in the water. He was taken into custody without incident.
