Man Pleads Guilty in Scheme That Involved Vehicle Break-Ins, ID Theft Targeting CU Members

PORTLAND, Maine–A man has pleaded guilty to charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in a scheme that victimized credit unions and their members.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Portland, from May to June 2022 Paul Logugune, 22, and a coconspirator broke into unattended vehicles to steal purses and wallets to obtain driver’s licenses and checkbooks. Forged checks were then drawn on the stolen checkbooks and made payable to the names on the stolen licenses.

“They then recruited others to cash the forged checks at multiple credit union branches in Cumberland County using the stolen IDs to impersonate the ID theft victims,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Logugune faces a maximum sentence of 30 years followed by up to five years of supervised release. He also faces a fine of up to $1 million. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
