ELKO, Nev.–A man convicted in the hit-and-run death of a credit union president in 2016 has been sentenced to eight to 20 years in prison.
In addition, Daniel Vasu, 28, was also fined $2,000 on one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving personal injury or death, after killing Doug Schwartz, president of Elko FCU here in June of 2016.
Schwartz was struck outside Machi’s Grill and Saloon by Vasu. A photo of Vasu's Jeep was posted on social media sites and news outlets in an effort to locate the driver, and he was arrested the following morning.
Schwartz died of his injuries at Northern Nevada Regional Hospital several hours after being struck.
Police said that Vasu consumed alcohol at the Blind Onion, the Tiki Hut, Goldie’s Bar, the Stray Dog Pub & Café, before returning to the Tiki Hut. Vasu had also sent a text message in which he stated that he was drunk.
