WESTLAND, Mich.–A man who found nearly $30,000 outside a credit union here is being hailed for his honesty after he turned the money in.
George Condash discovered the cash outside Wayne Westland FCU near an ATM. WDIV reported security video shows an armed security guard unloading several boxes of cash from an ATM but leaving a box by the side of the street. Twenty minutes later, the video shows Condash getting out of his car to inspect the box, on which he saw a tag reading "$40,000," according to WDIV.
Condash picked the box up, got into his car—but only to park it and then walked into the credit union and placed it on the counter.
"I said, 'Is there a reward for $40,000?' And I put it on their counter and they just looked dumbfounded," Condash told WDIV.
It turned out there was only $27,000 left inside of the ATM, but the $108 million WWFCU said it still rewarded Condash with an undisclosed amount of money, according to the report.
‘Token of Appreciation’
"That was a lot of money that could have resulted in a significant loss, and we just wanted to give him a token of our appreciation," the credit union’s cash manager, Alicia Stewart, later told CNN. "I would hope that the average person would turn that in, but not everybody thinks that way.”
Condash told the news outlets he has faith there are other good Samaritans out there.
"It's not mine and any honest person, I would hope, would take it back in," Condash said.
