Man Charged With $60K In Thefts In Debit Card Scheme

Chris Garcia

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—A man faces charges that include identity theft after stealing almost $60,000 from members of Nusenda CU through a debit card scheme.

Chris Garcia is accused of stealing $57,652 from 35 members of the $1.6-billion Nusenda after he allegedly created phony debit cards from stolen banking information, KOAT 7 reported.

Police say Garcia created fake cards that carried his own name but linked to the members’ accounts. The money was withdrawn from casinos and stores across New Mexico.

Authorities are uncertain how Garcia got the information, stating he may have hacked a CU computer, bought the card information off the Dark Web, or used a card skimmer.

Nusenda has notified members who have been affected.
