FRESNO, Calif.–A man has been arrested here for allegedly orchestrating a check forgery operation that led to more than a $250,000 in losses at local credit unions.
According to Fresno police, Tyrell Marquis McKenzie, 40, was arrested following an extensive investigation into a scheme that involved more than 150 forged checks. Police said McKenzie’s strategy included recruiting members of the credit unions to unlawfully access their accounts for fraudulent activities.
Police said in January the Fresno Financial Crimes Unit was alerted to reports of fraudulent check deposits at several credit union ATMs in the area. According to Police, McKenzie used an old method of check fraud by depositing forged checks and then quickly transferring funds before the checks could be flagged as fraudulent.
A search of McKenzie's apartment unearthed substantial evidence, including a variety of identification cards, social security cards, blank check stock, computers, printing equipment, and other devices, police said.
Police did not identify the credit unions involved.
