Maine’s CUs Latest to Deal With State’s Budget Impasse

AUGUSTA, Maine–Credit unions in this state are dealing with fallout from the shutdown of their respective state governments, while there is talk of shutdowns in two others.

New Jersey, meanwhile, passed a state budget after a short shutdown.

The Maine Credit Union League announced earlier that some of the state’s 58 credit unions would take steps to help members who are affected.

“The impact would be felt statewide so it is great that many of the state’s credit unions, from Madawaska to York and everywhere in between are offering some sort of program to assist state workers,” Todd Mason, president of the Maine Credit Union League, said in a released statement.

When the Legislature missed its midnight deadline to approve a budget Friday, it triggered an emergency order giving the governor authority over 12,000 state employees.  All nonemergency government functions are shut down until further notice. State parks managed by the Bureau of Parks and Lands in the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry will remain open.

The Illinois legislature also reached a budget deal after a long impasse.
