BALTIMORE—MECU of Baltimore held a celebration to mark its 80th anniversary.
MECU Board Chair Herman Williams, Jr. and MECU President and CEO John Hamilton, along with MECU members and special guests, paid tribute to the rich history of the credit union on Oct. 26.
“Our 80th anniversary celebration marks a milestone in MECU history that signals our strong commitment to the Baltimore community,” said Williams. “No other financial institution cares more deeply about the success of Baltimore than MECU. We are the largest Baltimore-based financial institution and we are dedicated to supporting our members, communities and organizations that make Baltimore great.”
MECU’s anniversary celebration was held at its 7 East Redwood St. headquarters. During the celebration, MECU members, some who have been members since the 1950s, spoke about the role the credit union has played in their lives.
"MECU has been a prominent part of my career," said Delores S. Harvey, an associate professor at Coppin State University and an educator for 57 years. "MECU was there for the important times in my life."
During the event celebration activities ranged from $80 raffles to candid photos in a Pixilated photo booth. There was also a prize wheel, live band, refreshments and a special appearance by former Baltimore Ravens star running back and Super Bowl champion Jamal Lewis. Nearly 200 MECU employees, board members, credit union members and prominent city officials attended to the anniversary.
“We are looking forward to continuing to serve Baltimore and helping our members prosper for many years to come," said Hamilton. "Last year, we made $197 million in loans in our community alone and our staff worked more than 4,250 volunteer hours helping charitable organizations. We measure our success by the number of lives we touch.”
