NEW YORK CITY–Municipal Credit Union has pledged $50,000 to support and help rebuild the nine credit unions/cooperativas based in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that were damaged by Hurricane Maria.
In addition, MCU said it is issuing a call to action for other New York area credit unions to also donate to support these hard-hit credit unions.
"Credit unions are based on the philosophy of 'people helping people.' In this extraordinary time of need, we believe it is important to support our fellow credit unions in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in their efforts to rebuild so they can continue to serve their members and communities," said Kam Wong, MCU president/CEO. "This is the time that we must demonstrate our resolve, and we call on other credit unions and leagues to join us by giving to help rebuild the credit unions devastated during this storm. Working together, we can make a real difference in this needing community."
MCU's donation will support the nine credit unions/cooperativas that are associate members of the New York Credit Union Association. Six are based in Puerto Rico and three in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The $2.6-billion MCU has more than 425,000 members.
