Long-Time Credit Union Supporter in Congress Retiring

WASHINGTON—A long-time supporter of credit unions, Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), announced he will not seek re-election in 2022. Upton, who has served in Congress since 1987.

Fred Upton

“Fred Upton has long been a friend to America’s credit unions and their millions of members. Fred’s pragmatic approach and drive to find commonsense solutions—most recently in his push to forgive most Paycheck Protection Program loans to help small business owners and credit unions focus on recovering from the pandemic—has long been an example of leadership in Congress,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle, who served in the House with Upton from 1991 to 2007. “I have appreciated working alongside Fred, first in my time in Congress, and in recent years to improve financial well-being for Michiganders and people across the country. I wish him well in his next adventure.”

PPP Supporter

Upton introduced legislation to simplify Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan forgiveness in July 2020. He also cited credit unions when speaking in support of legislation to update the PPP process, legislation that passed the House 417-1, CUNA noted.
