SACO, Maine–The long-time president of Saco Valley Credit Union is retiring. Carrie Shaw, who has been with the credit union for 33 years, said she will step down after beginning her career as a member service representative.
Shaw began her career in credit unions in 1983 and joined Saco Valley after a board member heard her speak at a National Youth Involvement Board meeting in 1985 and she was offered the presidency.
In addition to her work at the credit union, Shaw has also been very active in the community, serving on the Biddeford Saco Chamber of Commerce, as a trustee for the Maine Credit Union League Insurance Trust, and as treasurer for the Special Olympics. She has also received the Sam Walton Business Leader Award, the Saco Biddeford Chamber of Commerce’s William Kaney Leadership Award, and the Biddeford Saco Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award.
She also created Carrie’s Kids, a Christmastime foundation for impoverished youth in Saco. Shaw and the credit union’s staff are also known for sending out approximately 2,000 hand-signed Christmas cards every year.
“I never thought about retiring. I always thought I would die at my desk,” Shaw told local media. “But now I know life is too short.”
