TALLAHASSEE, Fla.–A former loan officer with FSU Credit Union here has been indicted on federal charges of embezzling more than $800,000.
A federal grand jury for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida indicted Kevin R. Lee on 20 counts of bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, theft from a lending institution and filing false tax returns. Lee allegedly used the funds to pay off his own debts.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, while he was the lending director, Lee, 35, used his position to open lines of credit using the personal information of three members without their consent.
Lee, who also served as the treasurer of the Tallahassee Chapter of Credit Unions, has been further charged with withdrawing and transferring funds from the accounts of 20 FSUCU members to three bogus accounts
“Lee used the embezzled funds and fraudulently obtained loan proceeds to pay his personal creditors, such as for his home mortgage and credit cards and to conceal his embezzlement,” to obtain or attempt to obtain more than $800,000, the indictment reads.
In addition, Lee has also been accused of submitting false tax returns for 2015, 2016. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted at his April trial.
