Lary McCants, One of the 1st Members and Later CEO of iTHINK Financial CU, Has Died

DELRAY BEACH, Fla.–Lary B. McCants, 77,  the former president and CEO of iTHINK Financial Credit Union who was also the CU’s 64th member, has died.

McCants had been employed by the former IBM Southeast Credit Union since 1988 and retired in 2014. His first five years he served as EVP-operations.

In 1993 McCants was appointed as president/CEO, where he served for more than 20 years. In his time as CEO, McCants oversaw the growth of the credit union to nearly $900 million from $261 million.

In addition, six additional credit unions were merged into the field of membership while he was CEO and the credit union’s branches expanded to 15 branches from four,

“Of all the changes under his leadership, the most intriguing were the credit union’s movement into social media, mobile banking, and electronic services, giving iTHINK Financial 24/7 remote access to accounts, information and services,” the credit union said.

Prior to working at iTHINK Financial, McCants was employed by IBM Corp. for 21 years, with his last position at IBM being site functional manager for the PC Division in Boca Raton. McCants was the 64th member to join the credit union when it was founded in 1969.

While he was president and CEO, McCants also served as a member and chairman of the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES), board member and marketing committee chairman of the Florida Credit Union Shared Services Organization, and was a member of the Political Action Committee of the Florida Credit Union League.

‘Inspirational & Caring’

“Lary was an inspiring and caring leader. He will be remembered as a true legend in the iTHINK Financial history books,” said Mike Miller, president/CEO at iTHINK Financial. “He was very kind and encouraging to everyone who knew or worked for him. Lary always had a story to tell, and he considered the credit union his baby. His 50 years of service in the credit union industry is extraordinary. He will be greatly missed by all.”

Lary is survived by his wife, Pat, and his three children, Chris, Kevin, and Missy. The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Trustbridge Hospice Foundation in Lary's name.
