WASHINGTON–The House Armed Services Committee has opted not to include language in a defense bill that would have given banks rent-free access to military installations.
Opposition to the language has been a high priority for CUNA, NAFCU and the Defense Credit Union Council both in the current Congress and prior sessions of Congress when the language was inserted before being deleted during the reconciliation process.
CUNA reported that following consideration of the Readiness and Military Personnel portions of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2022, the amendment was struck from the current bill.
CUNA said it, NAFCU and the DCUC were able to narrow the language of an amendment that would direct the Department of Defense (DoD) to study the larger issue of financial access to servicemembers on base.
“Thanks to strong CUNA/league advocacy credit unions successfully demonstrated their value and commitment to military members and families,” said Ryan Donovan, CUNA chief advocacy officer. “There are several steps left in the process, and we will remain engaged as this bill moves closer to the finish line.”
