Kroger Set To Roll Out Its Own Payments System

CINCINNATI—One of the largest companies to hold out on adopting Apple Pay, Kroger, has introduced its new mobile payment option in Columbus, Ohio and Colorado, with a nationwide rollout expected by the end of the year.

The grocery chain continues to resist Apple Pay, instead going with a QR code-based Kroger Pay system, 9 to 5 Mac reported.

Kroger’s new system is based on a single-use QR-based code. The QR code can be scanned during checkout to pay for groceries.

The QR code can be found within the Kroger Pay app and can be linked with any major credit or debit card, 9 to 5 Mac said.

Kroger has been among the most aggressive of retailers when it comes to payments-related issues. As CUToday.info reported here, the company has declined to accept Visa cards at its 2,800 stores and subsidiaries.
