WASHINGTON—Credit unions are being urged to keep up the advocacy momentum in policymakers’ home districts during the July 4 Congressional break this week.
The House is scheduled to come back into session July 10, and the Senate is expected to return July 9.
“We’ve had some major victories this year, but there are still additional regulatory relief opportunities to take advantage of before the end of this Congress,” said CUNA Chief Advocacy Officer Ryan Donovan. “S. 2155 was a historic win, but credit unions still need relief from the policies of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, clarity on the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it applies to websites, increased data security standards for merchants, Bank Secrecy Act modernization and we’re continuing our aggressive pushback against false claims from the banking industry, to name a few.
“This is a chance for legislators to see what credit unions do every day on behalf of the constituents and communities they represent, and we urge credit unions to utilize this opportunity,” Donovan added. “Invite your members of Congress to visit your credit union, tell your story face-to-face about how regulatory burdens are hampering member services and show them how common-sense regulations would increase access to those products and services.”
