OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –Mainstreet Credit Union is alleging it has been hit by a hacker or hackers based in China, with 300 of its members’ accounts compromised.
The credit union’s CEO, John Beverlin, said that the hackers took funds ranging from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars, according to Fox4KC.com. The news outlet quoted one member as saying someone had taken $1,900 from his account.
Beverlin told Fox4KC.com that the hacker(s) were based in China, but did not provide evidence of how the source of the hack was identified.
Beverlin also said Mainstreet CU has begun to refund any members’ who were victimized.
He also urged members to sign up for alerts via text or email so they can monitor transactions on their account to prevent fraud.
