MADISON, Wis.–The World Council is on the move, but this time just across town.
WOCCU is moving into space being made available by the Filene Research Institute in the Lyric building on East Washington Ave. in Madison, starting at the end of summer.
The World Council has had to move after CUNA Mutual has announced changes to its large campus on Mineral Point Rd. in Madison that had been WOCCU’s home. In 2021, CUNA Mutual demolished the circular building called the “International Commons” that had been home to the World Council at one point and has replaced it with a new office building.
As CUToday.info was first to report, CUNA Mutual said it is “reimagining” the entire office space it occupies, a decision that has also affected CUNA, which is now also looking for new space for its Madison operations. CUNA has been in that space since 1980.
Similarly, the World Council reported that in its 51-year history it has only had two homes, beginning its operations at Filene House in Madison in 1971. In 1979, World Council then moved to the Credit Union Center with CUNA and CUNA Mutual.
The Question
“Much like many businesses experienced during the COVID-era, the question around what to do with under-utilized physical workspaces arose for Filene,” WOCCU said. “Meanwhile, the pandemic transitioned WOCCU staff to a remote work setting, causing the organization to rethink what it needed in an office.”
Filene, which has been in its current space since 2017, said it had explored preliminary stages of sub-leasing a portion of its Madison office space prior to the start of the pandemic to share with other local credit union organizations and “invite more credit union connections, perspectives, and voices to be part of Filene’s network.”
The World Council said it was seeking to move somewhere that could accommodate their staff and that of Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions, Global Women’s Leadership Network and WYCUP, with flexibility in terms of the physical office space and more opportunities for collaboration.
‘Extremely Excited’
“We are extremely excited about the opportunities now available to WOCCU for further collaboration with Filene by sharing space with them in their Madison office,” said Paul Treinen, EVP with WOCCU. “Filene has always been a great partner with World Council over the course of our history and I have no doubt that will only grow in the coming years with this move.”
WOCCU reported it represents more than 86,000 credit unions with 375 million members in 118 countries.
