WASHINGTON–The new Congress means nominations for NCUA board seats have gone back to square one and must begin again.
The nomination of Rodney Hood for the Republican seat on the three-person board that has operated for more than a year with two people will now be returned to President Trump. The president will now have the option of resubmitting the nomination of Hood, who was originally nominated in June of 2018. Hood had previously served on the NCUA board from 2005-2010.
There is also a Democratic seat awaiting nomination. Current board member Rick Metsger continues to serve on the board even though his term expired in 2017.
Prior to the expiration of the previous Congress, the Senate rushed to approve 77 nominations, including 23 ambassadors, eight U.S. attorneys, eight U.S. Marshals, two members of the FCC and others, but it did not act on a number of nominations for financial regulators.
The term of current NCUA Chairman J. Mark McWatters expires in August of 2019, meaning President Trump will be able to nominate all three members of the NCUA board.
