WASHINGTON—Is a nomination for the open seat on the NCUA board in the works?
That rumor—and CUToday.info is emphasizing it is a rumor and no sources could vouch for its veracity—was the subject of a number of hallway discussions during CUNA’s America’s Credit Union Conference here.
The NCUA board has had just two members following former Chairman Debbie Matz’s decision to step down at the end of April, leaving current Chairman Rick Metsger and board member Mark McWatters on the board. McWatters has also been nominated for a seat on the Export-Import Bank Board, but that nomination as well as the NCUA board seat have all been held up by the partisanship in Congress, where Republicans have decided not to move on any nominations made by President Obama.
During ACUC, some sources speculated to CUToday.info that the logjam might be broken by a package of as many as 10 nominations for various open appointments.
In his Bacino Report earlier this month, former NCUA board member Geoff Bacino speculated that “It would be a long shot for a nominee to be able to get confirmed, but there may be a deal struck late in the session if the Republicans and Democrats can agree on a package of nominations that would garner bi-partisan support.”
