Internal Auditors Conclude Annual Meeting; Rights During an Exam Are Discussed

RENO, Nev.– The Association of Credit Union Internal Auditors (ACUIA) has wrapped up its 26th Annual Conference and One-Day Seminar here. Attended by internal auditors, risk managers compliance officers and supervisory committee members from across the nation, the meeting featured more than 30 general and breakout sessions. Attendees shared resources and best practices on a wealth of current hot-topics, compliance issues, fraud and cyber-security threats.

“The spirit of co-operation and people helping people is clearly in the air” said ACUIA Board Chairman John Gallagher. “It is gratifying to see audit, compliance and risk management professionals from every corner of the country openly sharing and helping one another continue excelling in this ever-changing regulatory environment and age of rapidly evolving technology”.

Kicking off the conference with a lively and rousing game of ACUIA Feud; returning Emmy Award winning host Todd Newton jump-started the week for attendees. His keynote presentation, “The Choice is Yours,” offered thoughtful and provocative insights on taking charge of the direction and quality of one’s career and life, according to ACUIA.

Great moments in history were vividly brought to life by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer David Hume Kennerly with his photos and first-hand accounts of being in the room during a multitude of historical moments, including Nixon’s resignation, Ford’s presidency, an Ali-Frasier fight and election night of the disputed Bush-Gore 2000 election.

Multiple panel and roundtable sessions included discussion of the use of analytics, fraud, and IT security and current compliance issues—where attendees openly discussed pressing issues relevant to their credit union.

Former NCUA General Counsel Robert Fenner helped attendees peek behind the curtain on NCUA exams with a presentation on “Your Rights, Before, During and After an NCUA Exam.” With more than 37 years of service at the NCUA—27 as General Counsel—Fenner walked conference goers through the exam process.

Meanwhile, at the ACUIA annual meeting and awards luncheon, board election results were announced with Chairman John Gallagher re-elected and Board Member Doug Wright elected to a full three-year term. Jill Meznarich, chief audit executive at Schools First FCU, received recognition as Auditor of the Year. ACUA’s 27th Annual Conference will be held in San Antonio June 20 – 23, 2017.
