In DC, CUs Watching 1 Issue, Everyone Else Watching Another

WASHINGTON–The attention of credit unions in Washington will be on one issue that’s of interest to CUs–regulatory relief legislation–and another that is of interest to just about everyone–the funding of the federal government.

Both CUNA and NAFCU are now focused on the House of Representatives as it looks to reconcile S 2155, which the Senate passed last week, with regulatory relief legislation it had passed earlier. As CUToday.info reported here, members of the House have made clear they will not “rubber stamp” the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act.

Much of the attention in both the Senate and the House this week, however, will be on funding the federal government after Friday, when the latest stopgap funding measure expires. Credit unions will be looking to ensure CDFI funding and other funds are included in whatever legislation is passed by Congress–unless no legislation is passed and another shutdown occurs.

The Agenda This Week

Also on tap in Washington this week:

  • Today, the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance will hold a hearing to discuss financing of terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime.
  • On Wednesday, the House Financial Services Committee will mark up a series of bills beginning at 10 a.m. ET;  the House Small Business Committee will explore the small business perspective within America's infrastructure, and the Senate Budget Committee will receive the president's economic report.
  • On Thursday, the Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson will testify before the Senate Banking Committee.
  • The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will meet on Thursday. On its agenda is a second further notice of proposed rulemaking related to calls made to reassigned numbers. NAFCU noted that in 2017 it voiced its support for the creation of a reassigned numbers database overseen by the FCC, and has recently met with the agency to discuss the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the commission's efforts to target illegal robocalls, an issue on which a court just ruled.
  • NAFCU also noted that  Friday is the last day to submit comments to NAFCU through its Regulatory Alert on the NCUA's proposed rule on involuntary liquidation and claims procedures.
