WASHINGTON–If ever there was a time to make a donation to CU Aid, the disaster relief found administered by the National Credit Union Foundation, this is it, according to one person.
Even as it is still processing a growing number of applications from Puerto Rico following the recent devastation of Hurricane Fiona, the Foundation is now preparing to provide assistance to the numerous credit union employees and volunteers in Florida who have been hit by Hurricane Ian.
As CUToday.info reported here, many credit unions remain closed in southwestern and south central Florida, and an untold number of CU employees have lost homes and been otherwise affected.
Gigi Hyland, executive director of the Foundation, said the organization is expecting that as many as 500 CU employees/volunteers in Puerto Rico will file applications seeking assistance. And now it can likely expect even more from Florida.
“We are working with the League of Southeastern CUs to assess the damage and to connect people in credit unions with each other regarding generators and mobile branches and assessing how much support is needed by employees and volunteers who need shelter,” Hyland said. “If ever there was a time to donate to CU Aid, this is it.”
