CROMER, U.K.–Hopefully, it’s not an omen.
A new credit union here has been named after a lost village. The credit union, “Shipden Savers,” takes its name from a village on the East Coast of England that was consumed by the sea in the 14th century. The credit union itself has opted for drier and higher ground in Cromer, in the county of Norfolk.
Shipden Savers is now inviting local residents to not just join the credit union but also to become volunteers. The CU is being established following a grant from Cromer Town Council. There are currently approximately 500 credit unions in the U.K. serving around one-million members.
More on the story behind the disappearance of Shipden can be found here.
