Ice T? No, Lemonade Day, With TDECU As The Sponsor

LAKE JACKSON, Texas–TDECU–Your Credit Union here again sponsored the local Lemonade Day in its markets, which is designed to empower today’s youth to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs by spending a day running their own lemonade stand.

The event is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business, TDECU said.

The Lemonade Day event hosted six elementary schools, while kids from the Dewitt County Boys and Girls Club were also counted among over 700 student participants.

“When we asked students, parents and teachers what meant the most to them about Lemonade Day, responses included the experience of working with friends to raise money toward a goal, and the added confidence as a result of the program,” noted TDECU’s Lucilla Henderson, vice president, business and community engagement. “We have great hopes the entrepreneurial spirit will continue on as we heard many of our participants were asking parents for permission to keep their stands open during summer months!”

Funds raised by school participants were used to throw an end of year party for each contributing grade level, while community-based participants planned to use their proceeds to donate to local charities.

According to LemondadeDay.org, its mission is to prepare youth for life through fun, proactive and experiential programs infused with life skills, character education, and entrepreneurship. Lemonade Day was created by founder Michael Holthouse in 2007, and is a “strategic lesson-based program that walks youth from a dream to a business plan, while teaching them the same principles required to start any big company. Inspiring kids to work hard and make a profit, they are also taught to spend some, save some and share some by giving back to their community. Since it’s launch in 2007 in Houston, Lemonade Day has grown from serving 2,700 kids in one city to more than one-million children across North America, according to the organization.
