House, Senate In Recess; Hearings Set For Next Week

WASHINGTON–Both the House and the Senate are in recess this week, with members in their home districts and state.

CUNA’s chief advocacy officer, Ryan Donovan, said he expects there will be some return to “normalcy” in Congress now that legislation has been passed to fund the government through September, although he expects the agenda will be affected by debate and response to President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency in order to fund a border wall.

Donovan said he and CUNA are hopeful of progress on nominations for the NCUA board and the FHFA.

When Congress returns next week Donovan said the hearings it will be watching include:

  • Testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday and the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday regarding the Fed’s view of the economy.
  • On Tuesday the House Financial Services Committee will also hold a hearing on credit bureaus.
  • On Wednesday a new House subcommittee on diversity and inclusiveness will hold a hearing on diversity and inclusion in the financial services industry.
